Highclere Castle / Downton Abbey

Highclere Castle / Downton Abbey
 is owned by the same family who built it 300 years ago.  Over the years it has taken on several remodels. As you see it today,  this redesigned exterior was accomplished in 1842 by Sir Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament in London, thus there are many similarities in style. 
Currently the 8th Earl and his wife, Countess of Carnarvon, live on the same property, although not in the castle itself. They do spend time here in a residential wing for holidays and special events

"Only One Will I Serve"

in Old Norman French,

the family motto,

is over every door and window on the 

outside of the castle and over many on the inside

Although photos are not allowed (oops) inside the castle, 
somehow a few ended up on our cameras for your benefit

This cathedral style ceiling inside Highclere Castle
 as well as many other ornate ceilings 
are never seen in the PBS series Downton Abbey.

Of all the rooms in the castle, 
they only used about 25% of them during filming

All of the current artwork and most of the furnishings are used in the filming, however several of the lamps are changed out to be consistent with the period of Downton Abbey

One of the actors who was walking across the set was 
heading for makeup and a change of clothes (Oh, that's Ron)

The gardens and grounds on the 5000 acre estate are magnificent and explain how the castle could daily have fresh flowers, grapes, meat and vegetables

As a working estate, the grounds are still used to 
support the castle through wool, grazing and the harvesting 
of various crops by tenant farmers

so she was not available to bestow 
us with our titles, so we "SORTED" it.

Purchasing entry Tickets: Be Persistent. We almost missed viewing Highlclere Castle because on my first on-line search, it showed that no tickets were available. On a later search we found tickets on Sept 2, 2018. This was the last day of ticket sales for the season and we secured 1:00 pm entry. We spent 3 luxurious hours in the castle, walking th grounds and having tea in the garden under a Horse-Chestnut Tree
