On the way to Uxmal we stopped at a
Cenote
(sink hole)
which was created in the underground limestone
by a meteor that landed in the area
There are over 2000 cenotes in the Yucatan
66 million years ago, after a 7.5-mile-wide asteroid crashed into the ocean near what’s now the port town of Chicxulub, Mexico. The impact brought the age of dinosaurs to an abrupt end, wiping out the vast majority of the iconic beasts along with about three-quarters of all life on Earth.

All around the Yucatan in its lowlands there is now a vast
eco-system of
coral, crocodiles, fish, iguana, turtles,
migration of flamingos and other birds & butterflies

Uxmal
Mayan ruins from the 7th - 10th Century
Similar to Chichén Itzá,
but even better with all of the vegetation around the site
and far less crowded.
UNESCO site added March 30, 2015
Still smiling after hiking up the 72 stairs to the top

These world renowned musicians are a part of the
Yucatan Symphony Orchestra.
They are from England, Bulgaria, Russia and Mexico.
Lucky Us to hear them perform at the beautiful
Hacienda La Cruz Palomeque
just outside the city of Merida

There are many elegant Haciendas located in the Yucatan
that were formerly working Henequen plantations. Only a few plantations remain, but the haciendas are now mostly retreats, boutique hotels and private estates.
Henequen is the
Green Gold
of the Yucatan,
which made fortunes for ranchers.
It is used to produce Sisal for weaving
baskets and rugs
Henequen is in the asparagus / agave plant family
Processed and drying of sisal

The Mayan Calendar
Since Calendar Round dates repeat every 18,980 days, approximately 52 solar years, the cycle repeats roughly once each lifetime, so a more refined method of dating was needed if history was to be recorded accurately. To specify dates over periods longer than 52 years, Mesoamericans used the Long Count calendar.
The Maya calendar uses three different dating systems in parallel, the Long Count, the Tzolkin (divine calendar), and the Haab (civil calendar). Of these, only the Haab has a direct relationship to the length of the year.
Very complicated to understand, but it sure is beautiful
