We witnessed an educational presentation
accompanied by a light show
over the River Spree in Berlin,
which was produced by the German government
to inform and educate the German people and visitors
Reischstag was the Imperial Rule during Hitler
Bundestag is the German government of today

Berlin
After WWII these three sectors were established,
France, Great Britain, and the USA (West Berlin)
Soviets (East Berlin)
ALL of Berlin sat inside the borders
of East Germany and East Berliners were escaping the rule of the Soviets, thus the GDR built the wall.
The wall, was basically built overnight with barbed wire,
later a cement structure was erected after over
3.5 million East Germans defected.
The wall was built to keep East Berliners
inside the confines of East Berlin.
5,000 escaped even after the wall was built,
while many were killed while attempting to escape.
The Death Strip
was located between sections of the double wall
(grassy area, with guard house on the left)
*
Our flat is located in what was a section of former East Berlin
(The blue square on the map below shows our flat,
which is literally two blocks inside the wall)
Today, with the wall removed, it is quite difficult to detect
what was East Berlin from West Berlin
*
All around Berlin,
on the exact location of the Berlin Wall,
one can see these markers on the ground as a reminder
of where the wall stood.
BERLINER MAUER 1961-1989
BERLIN WALL 1961-1989
*
There are small cut sections of the wall
in front of multiple businesses,
at train stations and elsewhere. We have seen many in the U.S.
as well as around the world
*
This was the scene on the day the wall
was opened between East & West Berlin
in 1989
Today small sections of the wall are left as a memorial
Multiple artists have crated iconic art pieces

Memorial to the Murdered Jews
Along side the American Embassy
2711 cement monuments
(no names. no dates)
represent over 3 million murdered Jews
who were marked with yellow stars in concentration camps
during WWII
*
The Memorial to Homosexuals
murdered (approx. 50,000-63,000)
during the same period is just across the street
This memorial is a single cement block
with a window through which you can view a video
of two women kissing and two men kissing.
Having been seen doing this was enough to send them
to concentration camps where they were
marked with a pink triangle
and sent to their deaths
A second, smaller memorial is located in
Schöneberg, an area with a high population of
Gay Men and Women
In English this memorial reads.
"Beaten to Death
Hushed
the Gay Victims of
National Socialism"
All of the walls in the chapel of
The Olympic Stadium in Berlin
are covered with gold leaf detail
with this message in multiple languages.
"Carry each other's burdens..."
*
"It's not a vacation,
it's a lifestyle"
