Mayan Pok Ta Pok
We watched a Mayan spiritual and cultural ritual and sporting event called Pok Ta Pok. The street in front of the Cathedral San Ildefonso was shut down for this event. The event occurs every Saturday night and there are bleaches that overflow with mesmerized locals and travelers from abroad. There are five players per team who square off divided by an approximate eight foot tall tower device with a hole on top. The object is to score points by knocking a hard rubber ball of approximately eight inches in diameter thought the hole. What makes this particularly difficult is that the ball can only be played and advanced by hitting it with their hips. At times the players dive and or slide onto the payment to advance the ball back and forth between the two teams. Did I mention that they are scantily attired and their bodies are artfully painted with what could be described as war paint. The game is very aggressive and entertaining to watch.

Looks like a wonderful place to be at Christmas!
ReplyDeleteThat dance is remnant of the earlier Mayan culture wherein the losers were beheaded! Watch, but don't play...
Have a memorable Christmas in Merida, and hope to see you in January.
Love to you both,
Christa
